Key Properties & Care

Amethyst is the most prized variety of the Quartz family. While it is durable enough for regular wear, its deep violet color can be sensitive to certain environmental factors:

• Mohs Hardness: Amethyst has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. It is a resilient stone but is softer than beryls (like your Morganite) and sapphires. It can show signs of surface wear over many years if it comes into frequent contact with harder materials.

• Cleaning: The safest cleaning method is lukewarm, soapy water and a soft-bristled brush. Avoid steam cleaners, as the intense heat can cause the stone to crack or its famous purple hue to shift or fade.

• Maintenance:

  • Avoid Intense Light/Heat: Prolonged exposure to very strong sunlight or high heat can cause the purple color of Amethyst to fade over time. It is best stored in a cool, dark place when not being worn.

  • Chemical Precautions: Keep the stone away from harsh household chemicals, especially those containing hydrofluoric acid or strong alkalis.

  • Ultrasonic Safety: Generally safe, provided the stone is not "heavily included" (containing many internal fractures). For a stone of this size and quality, manual cleaning is often the preferred professional recommendation.

• Storage: Store your amethyst in its own soft pouch. Because it sits at a 7 on the hardness scale, it can be easily scratched by almost everything else —including  Sapphires (9), Cubic Zirconia (8.5), and Morganite (8). Keeping it isolated will preserve that mirror-like polish on its large facets.
