Key Properties & Care
Moonstone is a variety of Feldspar, known for its romantic glow and delicate internal structure. It is a beautiful but somewhat sensitive gemstone that requires mindful handling by both the maker and the wearer.
-
Mohs Hardness: Moonstone has a hardness of 6 to 6.5. It is durable enough for pendants and earrings, but if set in a ring, a protective setting (like a bezel) is recommended to prevent the edges from chipping.
-
Cleaning: Use only lukewarm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Moonstone is sensitive to pressure and heat, which can cause its internal "layers" to separate or crack (cleavage).
-
Maintenance:
-
Cleavage Sensitivity: Moonstone has two directions of perfect cleavage, meaning it can break easily if struck at the right angle. Handle with care during the setting process.
-
Chemical Stability: Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals, including household cleaners, perfumes, and hairsprays, which can dull the stone's surface polish.
-
Low Heat: If you are a jeweler using a torch, always pull the stone before applying heat to the metal, as moonstone cannot withstand high temperatures.
-
-
Storage: Store moonstones in individual soft pouches. At a hardness of 6.5, they can be scratched by Quartz (7), Beryls (8), and Sapphires (9).
