This unique Purple Turquoise cabochon is cut into a tidy 6mm round with a low-profile 2.3mm height. A striking departure from traditional blue and green hues, this stone features a rich violet-to-plum color, typically interlaced with the characteristic copper or golden-brown matrix that gives Turquoise its iconic look. The 2.3mm height makes it an excellent choice for flush settings or delicate bezels where a high-domed profile isn't desired.
Its petite size and unusual color make it perfect for accenting silver or gold bands, stacking rings, or as a vibrant pop of color in multi-stone "boho" style earring designs.
A Note on Purple Turquoise: In the gemstone world, natural turquoise does not occur in purple. Purple Turquoise is typically high-quality natural Kingman or Sleeping Beauty turquoise that has been chemically bonded with a bronze or copper matrix and color-enhanced to achieve this vibrant regal shade. This process also increases the stone's durability.
Key Properties & Care
Because this is a stabilized and color-enhanced stone, it requires specific care to keep its violet hue looking fresh:
-
Mohs Hardness: Typically ranges from 5 to 6. While the stabilization process makes it harder and less porous than "chalk" turquoise, it is still a relatively soft stone compared to quartz or sapphire.
-
Cleaning: Clean only with a soft, damp cloth and very mild soapy water if necessary. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners, as the vibrations and heat can damage the stabilization bonding or affect the color treatment.
-
Maintenance:
-
Chemical Sensitivity: Avoid exposure to perfumes, hairsprays, and household cleaners. Turquoise is naturally porous, and even stabilized versions can be affected by harsh chemicals.
-
Low Profile: The 2.3mm height is great for "active wear" jewelry like rings, as it sits close to the metal and is less likely to be knocked or snagged.
-
Sunlight: While the color is stable, it is best not to leave treated stones in intense, direct sunlight for extended periods to ensure the purple remains vivid for years to come.
-
-
Storage: Store separately from harder stones. Since it sits at a 5.5 on the hardness scale, it will be easily scratched by Quartz (7), Morganite (8), and Sapphires (9).
