This striking pair of Rhodonite Cabochons is carved into a graceful, mirrored wing shape, each measuring 31mm by 12mm with a low-profile 4mm height. These stones feature a relatively flat top, which emphasizes their unique "painterly" aesthetics. The patterning is a classic Rhodonite mix: a soft, "rosy" pink base interlaced with dramatic, dendritic veins of black manganese oxide.

As a mirrored pair, these are exceptionally well-suited for high-impact statement earrings or a symmetrical "collar" style necklace. Their elongated, feathered silhouette provides a natural, organic flow that pairs beautifully with oxidized silver or copper wire-wrapping.

Key Properties & Care

Rhodonite is a manganese silicate mineral prized for its distinct color contrast. While it is durable enough for most jewelry, its unique mineral composition requires mindful handling:

  • Mohs Hardness: Rhodonite has a hardness of 5.5 to 6. It is similar in durability to Opal or glass. It is sturdy enough for earrings and pendants but can be scratched by harder materials like steel files, quartz, or the sapphires in your kit.

  • Cleaning: Use lukewarm water and a mild, dye-free soap with a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaners. Rhodonite can be somewhat brittle, and the vibrations or heat can stress the areas where the black manganese veins meet the pink silicate, potentially causing fractures.

  • Maintenance:

    • Surface Polish: Because these have a "flat top," scratches can be more visible than on a high-domed cabochon. Avoid rubbing them against other jewelry.

    • Chemical Sensitivity: Avoid exposure to harsh household chemicals and acids. The manganese inclusions can sometimes react to strong cleaners, which may dull the polished surface.

    • Low Profile: The 4mm height makes these lightweight and comfortable for ear-wear, but ensure they are set in a way that supports the "tips" of the wings, as the narrow ends can be more prone to snapping if dropped.

  • Storage: Always store this pair together but away from other gemstones. Wrap them in a soft cloth or place them in a padded compartment. Since they sit at a 5.5–6 on the Mohs scale,  Quartz (7), Beryls (8), and Sapphires (9) will easily scratch them.
