This striking Dendritic Opal cabochon is cut into a generous 28mm by 20.5mm oval with a sleek, low-profile 4mm high dome. Sometimes referred to as "Merlinite," this stone features a milky, porcelain-white base accented by dark, branching inclusions of manganese or iron. These natural, fern-like patterns—known as dendrites—spread across the stone like a winter landscape or a delicate ink sketch, ensuring that every cabochon is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece of nature.
The wide, flat surface of this cut perfectly showcases the intricate "forest" within the stone, making it a sophisticated choice for a large statement pendant or a centerpiece for a contemporary artisan cuff.
Key Properties & Care
Dendritic Opal is a form of common opal (which does not have the "fire" of precious opal). While it is a beautiful and relatively sturdy material, it is still a delicate mineral that requires specific care:
-
Mohs Hardness: Dendritic Opal has a hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. It is softer than quartz and should be worn with care to avoid surface scratches.
-
Cleaning: Gently clean using lukewarm water and a soft cloth. A very mild soap is acceptable if needed. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, as opal can be sensitive to heat and vibrations.
-
Maintenance:
-
Avoid Chemicals: Keep the stone away from harsh household chemicals, perfumes, and hairsprays, which can penetrate the surface and cause discoloration.
-
Avoid Dehydration: Opals contain a small percentage of water; avoid storing them in exceptionally dry environments or near heat sources for long periods, which could lead to "crazing" (fine surface cracks).
-
Avoid Impact: Because opal is somewhat brittle, it can chip if struck against a hard surface. It is best suited for protective settings like bezels.
-
Storage: Store your Dendritic Opal in a separate soft pouch or a lined jewelry box to prevent harder gemstones from scratching its polished surface.
