These warm Baltic Amber cabochons measure approximately 8mm across with a softly domed height of around 4.5mm, creating a delicate, lightweight gemstone with a naturally glowing presence. Each piece carries its own unique character, ranging from honey-gold and warm cognac tones through to soft butterscotch and deep amber-orange hues. Subtle internal inclusions, clouding, or ancient organic flecks may be present, adding depth and a sense of prehistoric intrigue that makes Amber so distinctive among gemstones.
The classic round cabochon shape and gentle dome allow light to pass beautifully through the resinous material, giving each stone a warm, glowing appearance as it moves. Their petite size makes them ideal for fine jewellery work such as delicate rings, stud earrings, small pendants, or clustered designs where multiple tones of Amber can be combined for a rich, organic effect. Amber pairs beautifully with sterling silver for a clean, modern contrast, or with gold tones for a warm, cohesive glow.
Key Properties & Care
Amber is fossilised tree resin, valued for its lightweight nature, warm colour palette, and natural inclusions that may include ancient plant material or air bubbles.
Mohs Hardness: Amber has a hardness of approximately 2 to 2.5, making it significantly softer than most gemstones and best suited to jewellery that will not be subjected to heavy wear or abrasion.
Cleaning: Clean very gently using a soft cloth dampened with lukewarm water. Avoid all ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaning, alcohol, solvents, and harsh chemicals, as Amber is highly sensitive and can become damaged or clouded.
Maintenance:
Durability: Amber is organic and relatively soft, so it should be protected from scratches, heat, and strong impacts. It is best reserved for earrings, pendants, or carefully worn rings.
Surface Finish: The polished surface gives Amber its characteristic warm glow and silky lustre, which can dull over time if exposed to harsh conditions.
Storage: Store separately in a soft pouch or lined jewellery box, away from harder gemstones and metals that could scratch its surface.
