Amber - Round

Key Properties & Care

Amber is an organic gemstone rather than a mineral, making it one of the softest materials used in jewelry. It requires very gentle handling to maintain its warm, polished glow:

• Mohs Hardness: Amber is quite soft, with a hardness of only 2 to 2.5 on the Mohs scale. It can be easily scratched by metal tools, household dust (which contains quartz), and even other gemstones.

• Cleaning: Clean only with lukewarm water and a very soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use soap unless absolutely necessary, and never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners, as the heat and pressure can cause amber to crack or melt.

• Maintenance:

  • Avoid Chemicals: Amber is highly sensitive to chemicals. Keep it away from hairspray, perfume, nail polish remover, and household detergents, as these can permanently dull or damage the surface.

  • Avoid Heat and Sunlight: Do not leave amber in direct sunlight or near heat sources (like a car dashboard), as it can become brittle or lose its luster.

  • Avoid Impact: Due to its soft nature, amber can chip or break easily. It is best suited for settings that protect the edges of the stone.

• Storage: Always store Amber separately in a soft flannel or silk pouch. Ensure it does not rub against any other jewelry, as almost any other material will scratch its delicate surface.
