Beautiful round Bird's Eye Jasper cabochons measure 10mm in diameter, with height ranging from 4.5mm to 5.5mm.
True to its name, these stones look like a collection of clustered geological 'eyes'; they feature a contrasting base color, typically dark red, mustard, or deep green, covered with tight, concentric circles or 'eyes' in contrasting shades of cream, gray, or blue. The organic variation in height gives the stone a handcrafted, tactile feel, while the small oval surface provides a perfect canvas for its distinct, high-contrast visual texture. With their petite size and intriguing, 'seeing-stone' aesthetic, these jaspers are a natural choice for stud earrings, small articulated links in a necklace, or as unique focal points in a more complex composition.
Key Properties & Care
Jasper is an opaque variety of Chalcedony (Quartz), meaning it is a microcrystalline mineral known for its incredible toughness and "wearability."
- Mohs Hardness: Bird's Eye Jasper has a hardness of 6.5 to 7. It is a very sturdy gemstone that is resistant to daily scratching and scuffing, making it one of the best choices for jewelry that might see a bit of "rough and tumble."
- Cleaning: This stone is very easy to care for. You can clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush. While it is generally safe for ultrasonic cleaners, manual cleaning is usually sufficient for jasper. Avoid steam cleaners, as rapid temperature changes can occasionally stress natural stone.

Maintenance:
- Durability: Unlike the Apatite or Opal we discussed, Jasper is not porous and is very chemically stable. It won't be harmed by perfumes or skin oils.
- Surface Finish: Because of its microcrystalline structure, it takes a high polish that stays glossy for a very long time.
- Storage: At a hardness of 7, Jasper can scratch softer stones like Rhodonite (6) or Opal (6). However, it can still be scratched by Sapphires (9) and Cubic Zirconia (8.5), so keeping it in its own pouch is always the smartest move.
