These sleek Black Cubic Zirconia stones are precision-cut into a classic 4mm square with a 2mm height. Unlike natural black gemstones which can sometimes have organic imperfections, these lab-created stones offer a flawless, uniform "midnight" black with a mirror-like finish. The square facet cut (often referred to as a princess or step cut) provides sharp, clean lines and a modern, architectural aesthetic that captures light across its surface with a brilliant, vitreous luster.
Their consistent 4mm size makes them perfect for calibrated jewelry settings, such as geometric stud earrings, channel-set bands, or as crisp accent stones in a larger contemporary piece.
Key Properties & Care
Cubic Zirconia (CZ) is a lab-synthesized crystalline material designed to be a high-durability alternative to natural gemstones. It is exceptionally tough and maintains its sparkle even with heavy daily wear:
-
Mohs Hardness: Black CZ has a hardness of approximately 8.5 on the Mohs scale. This makes it significantly harder than most natural semi-precious stones, meaning it is highly resistant to scratching, scuffing, and dulling.
-
Cleaning: These stones are very easy to maintain. You can clean them with lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft-bristled brush to remove any skin oils or dust. They are also safe for use in ultrasonic and steam cleaners, provided the jewelry setting itself can handle those methods.
-
Maintenance:
-
Resilience: Unlike natural black stones (like Obsidian or Onyx), Black CZ is not porous and will not absorb oils or chemicals, ensuring the deep black color never fades or shifts.
-
Heat Resistance: CZ is highly heat-resistant, making it a favorite for "cast-in-place" jewelry techniques where stones are set in wax and cast directly into molten metal.
-
Impact: While very hard, like any crystalline material, a sharp impact against a hard surface could still chip a facet edge.
-
-
Storage: Because CZ is quite high on the hardness scale, it can scratch softer stones like Amethyst or Turquoise. Store your Black CZ pieces in a separate compartment or a soft pouch to protect your other jewelry.
