This one-of-a-kind Labradorite teardrop cabochon measures approximately 21.2mm by 13mm with a dramatic domed height of around 7mm, giving the stone an almost sculptural presence that beautifully amplifies its shifting internal fire. At first glance the surface appears deep smoky grey, but as the light moves across the stone it erupts with vivid flashes of electric blue, teal, green, and hints of golden iridescence. This remarkable optical effect, known as labradorescence, gives Labradorite its signature mysterious glow and ensures that no two stones are ever alike.
The elegant teardrop shape combined with the generous dome creates exceptional depth and movement within the stone, allowing its flashes to appear to float beneath the surface. Its larger size makes it perfectly suited to a striking statement pendant, bold artisan ring, or showcase piece where the natural beauty of the gemstone can truly take centre stage. Labradorite pairs especially well with sterling silver, oxidised finishes, and organic hand-crafted textures that complement its moody, magical aesthetic.
Key Properties & Care
Labradorite is a Feldspar mineral prized for its dramatic flashes of colour and captivating light effects.
Mohs Hardness: Labradorite has a hardness of approximately 6 to 6.5. It is suitable for jewellery use but should be worn with some care to avoid scratches, knocks, or sharp impacts.
Cleaning: Clean gently using warm soapy water and a soft cloth or brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaning, and harsh chemicals, as sudden temperature changes and strong vibrations may damage the stone.
Maintenance:
Durability: Labradorite has natural cleavage planes that can make it vulnerable to chipping if struck sharply, especially around pointed shapes like teardrops. Protective settings are recommended for rings or frequently worn pieces.
Surface Finish: The polished cabochon surface enhances the stone’s labradorescence, allowing its internal flashes of colour to shift dramatically in changing light.
Storage: Store separately in a soft pouch or lined jewellery box to prevent scratches from harder gemstones or metal tools.
