This magnificent Labradorite cabochon is a true showstopper, featuring a generous 29mm by 20.5mm oval cut with a substantial 8.5mm high dome.
Known for its spectacular labradorescence, this stone displays a mesmerizing play of color—typically shifting between electric blues, shimmering greens, and flashes of gold—set against a deep, smoky grey base. The high-domed cut is specifically designed to maximize light refraction, ensuring the stone "glows" from a specific angle as it catches the light - which was very hard to capture in a photo!
Its impressive scale makes it an ideal centerpiece for a bold statement pendant or a focal point in a bespoke handcrafted cuff.
Key Properties & Care
As a member of the Feldspar family, Labradorite is prized for its optical phenomena, but its internal structure requires specific care to prevent damage:
-
Mohs Hardness: Labradorite has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. While suitable for jewelry, it is softer than quartz and should be handled with care to avoid surface scuffs.
-
Cleaning: Clean only with lukewarm water and a soft, non-abrasive cloth. Avoid the use of ultrasonic cleaners or steam cleaners, as the vibrations and heat can cause the stone to crack or delaminate.
-
Maintenance:
-
Avoid Chemicals: Exposure to acids, perfumes, and cleaning solvents can damage the delicate surface and dull the stone’s flash.
-
Avoid Impact: Due to its internal cleavage planes, Labradorite is susceptible to "cleaving" or cracking if hit sharply. It is best suited for protective settings like bezels.
-
Storage: Store in a separate soft pouch to ensure harder gemstones or metal components do not scratch the polished dome.
