Marcasite is an iron sulfide mineral. While it possesses a beautiful metallic brilliance, its unique chemical structure requires specific care to prevent tarnishing or damage:

• Mohs Hardness: Marcasite has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. It is relatively durable but brittle, meaning it can chip if subjected to a sharp blow.

• Cleaning: Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth to buff the surface. Avoid using water, and never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Moisture can react with the iron content in the stone over time, potentially leading to oxidation or "pyrite decay."

• Maintenance:

  • Avoid Chemicals: Keep the stone away from household cleaners, perfumes, and perspiration. Acids and moisture are particularly damaging to the stone's metallic finish.

  • Avoid High Humidity: Store your Marcasite in a dry environment. In very humid climates, using a silica gel packet in your storage area can help preserve the stone's integrity.

  • Avoid Impact: Due to its brittle nature, Marcasite should be handled carefully and is best protected by a secure bezel setting.
