These luminous Moonstone cabochons measure approximately 8mm across with a softly rounded dome height of around 4.5mm, creating a delicate yet eye-catching profile that beautifully showcases the stone’s famous inner glow. Depending on the individual stone, Moonstones can display soft milky-white, translucent cream, pale peach, or silvery-grey body tones, often accompanied by flashes of blue, rainbow, or pearlescent light that seem to drift beneath the surface as the stone moves. This enchanting optical effect, known as adularescence, gives Moonstone its dreamy, ethereal character.
Their petite round shape and gentle dome make these cabochons especially versatile for jewellery design. They are a beautiful choice for dainty rings, celestial-inspired earrings, delicate pendants, or clustered gemstone arrangements where subtle flashes of light can catch the eye. Moonstones pair beautifully with sterling silver for a cool, mystical aesthetic, but also glow warmly when set alongside yellow gold or brass.
Key Properties & Care
Moonstone is a variety of Feldspar valued for its glowing optical phenomena and soft, romantic appearance.
Mohs Hardness: Moonstone has a hardness of approximately 6 to 6.5. While suitable for jewellery, it is softer than Quartz and should be treated with a little extra care to avoid scratching or chipping.
Cleaning: Clean gently with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaning, and harsh chemicals, as sudden temperature changes and vibrations can damage the stone.
Maintenance:
Durability: Moonstone has natural cleavage planes, meaning it can crack or chip if knocked sharply. Protective settings are recommended for rings or frequently worn pieces.
Surface Finish: The smooth cabochon cut enhances the stone’s adularescence, allowing its internal flashes and glowing sheen to move beautifully in changing light.
Storage: Store separately in a soft pouch or lined jewellery box to protect the polished surface from scratches caused by harder gemstones and metals.
