To keep your mandrel undented always use a nylon or rawhide hammer. If you want to use it for texturing with metal hammers you can protect it with some masking tape, or get a second mandrel - one just for texturing.
The whole mandrel is 300mm long, sized from 10mm at the tip to 23mm at the base.
