This one-of-a-kind Smoky Quartz cabochon measures approximately 18.5mm by 24.5mm with a low domed height of around 5.5mm, offering a broad, organic shape with a soft, grounded presence. The stone displays a beautiful range of smoky tones, from pale tea-brown and warm cognac through to deeper charcoal shading, with natural variations in transparency that allow light to drift gently through the body of the quartz.
This piece has a more rustic cut, with slightly uneven shaping and less precise symmetry, giving it a natural, unrefined character that suits handmade or organic-style jewellery. Despite its imperfect finish, the stone still carries the quiet elegance Smoky Quartz is known for, with a soft glow that becomes more noticeable when backlit or set against lighter metals.
The elongated, slightly asymmetrical oval form makes it well suited to freeform or artisan settings, particularly pendants or statement rings where a more natural aesthetic is preferred. It pairs beautifully with sterling silver, oxidised finishes, or warm brass tones, depending on whether you want to highlight its moody depth or keep the overall design soft and earthy.
Key Properties & Care
Smoky Quartz is a variety of Quartz prized for its earthy colouration, durability, and grounding visual quality.
Mohs Hardness: Smoky Quartz has a hardness of approximately 7, making it a durable and reliable gemstone suitable for most jewellery applications.
Cleaning: Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or brush. Ultrasonic cleaners are generally safe for Quartz, though gentle hand cleaning is recommended to preserve surface polish.
Maintenance:
Durability: Quartz is highly stable, resistant to scratching, and well suited to everyday wear.
Surface Finish: The polish enhances the stone’s natural depth and smoky colour zoning, allowing subtle internal movement to become visible in changing light.
Storage: Although durable, Smoky Quartz can still be scratched by harder gemstones such as Sapphire or Diamond. Store separately in a soft pouch or lined jewellery box to maintain its finish.
