Key Properties & Care
Sodalite is a mineral known for its vibrant blue color and is part of the feldspathoid group. It is a durable stone, but generally softer than quartz varieties like agate or jasper.
- Mohs Hardness: Sodalite has a hardness of 5.5 to 6. While suitable for jewelry, it is softer than quartz and requires more care to prevent scratching.
- Cleaning: This stone is easy to care for. You can clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush. It is not recommended for ultrasonic or steam cleaners, as heat and rapid vibration can cause damage or internal stress.
-
Maintenance:
- Durability: Sodalite is chemically stable and won't be harmed by typical perfumes or skin oils. However, prolonged exposure to heat or strong acids can cause damage.
- Surface Finish: It takes a smooth polish, but care should be taken to avoid abrasive materials which can dull the surface.
- Storage: At a hardness of 6, Sodalite can be scratched by nearly every other gemstone, including Quartz (7) varieties like Amethyst, Jasper, and Agate. It should always be stored separately in its own cloth pouch or a dedicated compartment to prevent surface damage.
